Hawaii wrestlers undefeated at Pan-Am

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala » Hawaii wrestlers Danyelle Hedin and Stephany Lee went undefeated in the preliminary rounds at the Pan American Championships on Thursday.

Hedin, a Kailua High School senior, pinned Valeria Corvalan Molina of Chile and Mirna Enriquez of Venezuela in the 55-kg (121-pound) division.

Lee, a Moanalua graduate, pinned Raine Guerra of Venezuela in her only pool match in the 72-kg (158.5-pound) division.

Hedin was scheduled to meet Dora Martinez of Guatemala yesterday. A win would send her to the gold-medal match. Lee was scheduled to face Brazil's Rosangela Conceicao for the gold.

UH-Hilo, BYUH advance to nationals

The Hawaii-Hilo and Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis teams advanced to the NCAA Division II national championships with regional victories yesterday.

Top-ranked BYUH swept Hawaii Pacific 5-0 in Laie to win its 97th consecutive match, while UH-Hilo moved on with a 6-1 win over UC San Diego at the UHH courts.

The final rounds of the tournament are part of the NCAA Division II Spring Sports Festival set for May 12-15 in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Rainbow Wahine split with Spartans

SAN JOSE, Calif. » The University of Hawaii softball team opened its final series of the season with a doubleheader split with San Jose State yesterday at SJSU Field.

Denise Dahlberg and April Crowell delivered run-scoring hits in the fifth inning to give UH a 3-0 lead and the Rainbow Wahine held off a Spartans rally to win the first game 3-2.

Melissa Coogan (10-18) struck out five and picked up the win, while Paula Blanning earned the save.

In the second game, Megan Delgado's two-run triple to center field in the bottom of the sixth helped the Spartans win 2-1.

The Rainbow Wahine close the regular-season today with another doubleheader with the Spartans.

Fujimoto named to all-region team: UH-Hilo catcher Natalie Fujimoto was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-West Region second team.

The sophomore from Aiea led the Vulcans with a .363 batting average. She hit four home runs and drove in 17 runs.

Odelius moves up at regional

STANFORD, Calif.» University of Hawaii freshman Sara Odelius shot even-par 72 yesterday to move into a tie for 12th place in the second round of the NCAA Women's Golf West Regional at Stanford Golf Course.

Odelius is tied with four golfers at 2-over 146 entering today's final round and is eight strokes behind leader Hannah Jun of UCLA.

The top eight teams and the top two individuals advance to the national finals set for May 18-21 at Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Ala.

Football officials needed for all levels

The Hawaii Football Officials Association needs sideline and field officials and will hold general membership meetings beginning June 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Saint Louis Alumni Clubhouse.

There is no experience necessary and training will begin next month. Officials are needed for Pop Warner and High School levels.
