UH-Hilo's Mason qualifies for NCAA Tournament

BELLINGHAM, Wash. » Hawaii-Hilo's Nick Mason had the day's best round -- a 4-under 68 -- to finish third at the NCAA Division II West Regional golf tournament yesterday. The performance qualified him for the Division II national championship tournament May 12-15 at Orlando, Fla.

The final charge gave Mason a final score of 211, 5-under. Cal State-Stanislaus' Ryan Thornberry won with a total of 7-under.

Chico State won the team title at 9-under collectively.

UH's Tuyay is Filipino Fiesta grand marshal

Kimo Tuyay, a senior captain on this year's Hawaii men's volleyball team and a starter on the 2002 national championship squad, has been named grand marshal of the 12th annual Western Union Filipino Fiesta. A parade and festival will take place May 22 at Ala Moana Park and Kapiolani Park.

Tuyay is a former student worker at FilCom, the Filipino Community Center. He will join the Philippine national team in June.

Hawaii eighth at WAC golf championships

FRESNO, Calif. » The Hawaii men's golf team ended its season yesterday with an eighth-place finish at the Western Athletic Conference championship tournament.

Hawaii shot 13-over on the final day to total a three-day score of 885. Matt Kodama's tie for eighth in the individual standings led UH.

Southern Methodist won the team title by 11 strokes.

Hawaii's Novick first-team All-MPSF water polo

Hawaii's Beth Novick was named first-team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation by the league's water polo coaches.

Novick, the only UH honoree, had 64 goals in 28 matches to lead the MPSF in scoring. She was the first Rainbow Wahine to be named to the MPSF first-team since Marie-Luc Arpin in 1998.

Seasiders sign Ventura prep player of the year

Brigham Young-Hawaii signed Ventura County player of the year Daniel Carson to a national letter of intent to play water polo, the school announced yesterday.

Carson led Newbury Park High to its league championship while scoring 121 goals on his way to co-league MVP honors.

Islanders without 2 starters at San Diego

The arenafootball2 Hawaiian Islanders will be without two starters -- Eddie Klaneski and Anthony Arceneaux -- Saturday at San Diego.

The team said yesterday that the two standouts -- Klaneski leads the Islanders in tackles and Arceneaux in touchdown catches -- will not make the trip due to injuries suffered against Bossier-Shreveport.

Arceneaux is expected to miss one game, while Klaneski will miss at least three weeks before being evaluated again.

Hawaii's Phillips runner-up at UH Heptathlon

Hawaii junior Lana Phillips used consistent performances in the long jump, javelin and 800 meters to move up to a second-place finish on the second and final day of the UH Heptathlon Invitational yesterday.

Jessica Massicotte, a Canadian athlete, won with 4,166 points.
