A Waianae police officer was arrested Monday after he allegedly threatened to kill a man and used his baton to smash the man's car window and hit him, according to a police source.
Police spokeswoman Michelle Yu confirmed yesterday that the officer, 25, was arrested at 6:55 a.m. Monday for first-degree terroristic threatening and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle. He was booked at the Kapolei station and released pending investigation.
The officer has been placed on administrative leave and was stripped of his police powers, gun and badge, she said.
Police officials have not provided a written summary of the incident after more than 24 hours, as is routinely done with other arrests on felony charges. Ranking officers at Waianae and Kapolei stations yesterday deferred all calls to Yu. She said that often written highlights from outlying areas are not received on the same day.
According to a police source, the victim went to the off-duty officer's home before 3 a.m. Monday and accused him of having an affair with his girlfriend. The man, who is in his 20s, told police he was in his car when the officer came out of his house with his gun and baton, the source said.
The officer allegedly threatened to kill the man, swung his baton and broke the man's car window and struck him, according to the source. The man fled and reported the incident to police at the Waianae station at about 3 a.m.
The arrested officer has been with the Honolulu Police Department for 3 1/2 years.
HPD's Internal Affairs is investigating the incident.
Yu acknowledged the officer allegedly threatened the man and allegedly broke a car window, but provided no further details.
