Kitchen happiness

A mother-daughter cooking show that was filmed in Hawaii debuts nationwide on public television this weekend.

"Double Happiness," featuring restaurateur Leeann Chin and her daughter, Katie, airs at 6:30 p.m. Saturdays on KHET-PBS.

The show focuses on from-scratch Chinese cooking designed for simplicity, as in the Chins' cookbook, "Everyday Chinese" (Clarkson Potter, 2000).

Leeann Chin grew up in Canton, where she learned to cook by following her family's chef around. In 1956, she moved with her husband and young children to Minneapolis.

This was a time and place where Chinese cooking was barely known, but Chin found a market for her cooking skills as a teacher and caterer. In 1980, she opened her first restaurant, which has grown into the 47-restaurant chain, Leeann Chin Chinese Cuisine.

Leeann and Katie Chin are partners in Double Happiness Catering in Los Angeles and have appeared together in several Food Network programs.

Episodes of "Double Happiness," the TV show, were taped in a private Nuuanu home last year by First Daughter Productions, the Honolulu company that produces chef Roy Yamaguchi's PBS cooking shows.
