Kauai gets more summer flights

LIHUE >> Three airlines are gearing up to add new direct flights from the mainland to Lihue Airport for the summer months.

United, which in the winter months has one daily flight each to and from Los Angeles and San Francisco, is increasing its schedule to three or four flights, depending on the day of the week. United began adding nonstop flights to Lihue in April and will be going full stride as of June 5.

American Airlines, which has a daily flight from Los Angeles to Lihue, is adding a second daily flight on June 2.

On both United and American, mainland-bound passengers will have a choice of early afternoon flights or red-eye flights. In the winter months, all eastbound United and American flights leave late at night.

And Aloha Airlines is reviving its direct Oakland-Lihue nonstop flight June 17 for the summer months. Beginning July 2, Aloha also will add a second daily flight between Oakland and Honolulu, bringing its summer schedule connecting Hawaii to the San Francisco Bay Area to five flights a day.

Sue Kanoho, executive director of the Kauai Visitors Bureau, said the additional flights mean the airlines are confident of a good summer tourist season for Kauai.

"Summer is a very popular time and they would only add the flights if they're pretty sure they can fill the airplanes," Kanoho said.

Hawaiian Airlines, which is Boeing Capital Corp.'s fifth-largest customer, was more than 90 days delinquent at the end of March on $4 million it owed the aircraft lessor.

A quarterly Securities and Exchange Commission filing by Boeing Capital showed the total value of Hawaiian-leased aircraft in Boeing Capital's $1.2 billion portfolio was $485 million as of March 31. The airline, which has been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization since March 21, 2003, has been trying to renegotiate leases on 14 aircraft after previously returning two aircraft and rejecting delivery of another.

"The amount that's 90 days in arrears is partially driven by the normal payment cycles on the aircraft and it will be addressed when we file a final claim," said Boeing Capital spokesman Russ Young.

Boeing Capital, which has filed a reorganization plan with turnaround firm Corporate Recovery Group LLC, already has filed a claim of $40.4 million for the three discarded planes. Boeing and CRG expect Boeing Capital's final claim, which includes the previous claim, to be about $100 million.

Carty to air views on Hawaiian Air

Carty, the former president and CEO of American Airlines, will talk about the reorganization process and provide his view on the state of the airline industry.

Luana Waikiki upgrade wraps up

The Outrigger Luana Waikiki, which is undergoing an $11 million upgrade, has been added to the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts condominium collection.

Renovations to the 217-room condominium hotel, formerly known as the Waikiki Terrace Hotel, are expected to be completed by July. The property was given a face-lift that included structural, as well as interior and exterior design changes. Renovations include new furnishings and fixtures; exterior painting; and improvements to the lobby and fitness room.

The property is open for hotel business at reduced rates during the renovation process, said Outrigger spokesman Jim Austin.
