Rainbow Wahine tennis team eliminated

The Rainbow Wahine tennis team ended its season with a 4-0 quarterfinal loss at the hands of No. 2 seed Southern Methodist in the Western Athletic Conference Championships yesterday at Houston, Texas, in a rain-suspended match from the previous night.

SMU took the doubles point, winning the Nos. 2 and 3 spots over the teams of Lauren Fitzgerald and Paige Mainor and Justine Boutet and Renata Carmargo. UH was swept in the singles matches.

Takata wins judo championship

Iolani graduate Taylor Takata won the 66-kg division of the 2004 USA Judo National Championships yesterday at the Jenny Craig Arena in San Diego, Calif.

The win helped Takata earn a spot in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, June 5th in San Jose. Aiea's Scott Pak also competed in Takata's division and placed fifth.

Seasiders swept in softball

For the second-consecutive day, Western New Mexico's Angela Slaugh dominated the BYU-Hawaii softball team, holding it to three hits in each game as the Lady Mustangs swept a doubleheader 7-1 and 6-1 yesterday in Silver City, N.M.

Both Seasider runs were unearned off Slaugh, who improved to 34-5 on the season. She did not give up an earned run in all four games against BYU-Hawaii, finishing the series with 35 striekouts in 26 innings. The Seasiders end their season with a 12-23 record, 4-12 in Pac West play.

Quarterback Club speakers announced

UH defensive coordinator George Lumpkin, linebackers coach Cal Lee, and offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh, along with 1998 quarterback club award winner Ferd Borsch, will all be speakers at tomorrow's quarterback club luncheon at the Pagoda ballroom.

The public is welcome at the event, which will begin at 11:30 a.m.

Ilustre and Fuamatu become victim number 70

Former University of Hawaii volleyball player Heidi llustre and teammate Tanya Fuamatu, an ex UH-Hilo volleyball player, became the 70th-straight team to lose to top-ranked Misty May and Kerri Walsh 21-9, 21-10 in the Austin Open at Austin, Texas.

In other action, Punahou graduate Sean Scott and teammate Todd Rodgers gained a bit of redemption by defeating 9th-seeded Dax Holdren and Stein Metzger 21-14, 21-7.

Rainbow Wahine drop below .500

Audrey Harrer scored a pair of goals of the Hawaii water polo team surrendered eight goals in the second half and the rainbow Wahine fell 9-4 to California in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament yesterday in Los Alamitos, Calif.

Hawaii dropped to 13-14 and play UC Santa Barbara today for seventh place.
