Registration begins
for Junior Lifeguards

The Ocean Safety Division and the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association are accepting registration for this summer's Junior Lifeguard Program, which begins June 14.

Registration by parents or guardians will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at The City Store at Ala Moana Shopping Center; Kalama Beach Park in Kailua; Waimanalo Intermediate School; Sunset Beach Elementary; and Waianae Store at Pokai Bay. The five-day course, offered over seven sessions, also will be held at these locations.

Each course will familiarize teenagers with ocean and beach skills. It includes an introduction to ocean safety, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, first aid, and surf rescue techniques, with an emphasis on ocean swimming, paddle boarding and lifesaving skills.

Applicants must be between 13 and 17 years of age (by June 1), and have strong swimming skills and a desire to learn about the ocean. This is not a learn to swim program, sponsors emphasized.

The schedule follows:

Session 1 -- June 14 through 18;
Session 2 -- June 21 through 25;
Session 3 -- June 28 through July 2, no program on Independence Day;
Session 4 -- July 6 through 9;
Session 5 -- July 12 through 16;
Session 6 -- July 19 through 23;
Session 7 -- July 26 through 30.

Although the course is free, a $25 donation may be made to The Hawaiian Lifeguard Association.
