Fine jeweled falcon

The Maltese Falcon is not just a film buff's grail. The treasured statue from the 1941 film starring Humphrey Bogart captured the imagination of Ronald Winston, chairman of the jewel house of Harry Winston, who fashioned the 10-pound solid 18K gold and bejeweled Winston Falcon, worth more than $8 million.

The Winston Falcon is based on the original Maltese Falcon prop, which Ronald Winston purchased at a Christie's auction for $398,000.

The Winston Falcon stands nearly a foot tall on an exotic malachite base with ruby eyes, and 42.98-carat pear-shaped diamond hanging from a platinum chain in its beak.

The falcon is on view from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today through Saturday in the Neiman Marcus Precious Jewels Salon, along with a selection of rare Harry Winston timepieces.

Closing shop

Alas, fashion divas will be losing a favorite boutique when Blumarine closes at Ala Moana on Monday. Until then the boutique is offering 30 percent to 75 percent off merchandise, including new items.

As always in this town, smaller sizes disappear fast, so run on down. Just remember, I have dibs on the frothy yellow silk chiffon skirt.
