In the Mix

Oakenfold’s really
booked at Pipeline

A FEW readers out there didn't believe me when I wrote that Paul Oakenfold would be in town this weekend.

But it's true, yes it's true, one of house music's founding fathers will be here for a show Saturday night at Pipeline Cafe.

Now in his early 40s, Oakenfold (or "Oakie," as some of his fans like to call him) made a name for himself during the '80s as one of the world's top mixers, and helped give the Spanish island of Ibiza its non-stop party reputation long before it was featured on E! Entertainment's "Wild On ..." and gained recognition among mainstream partygoers.

A former A&R consultant, he now has his own record label, Perfecto Records, and DJ Magazine even called him the "Best DJ in the World" back in 1998. Even if you're not really a house fan, this concert is worth the money just so you can tell people you've seen Oakenfold spin live.

Doors open at Pipeline at 8 p.m. on Saturday, with the show starting at 9 p.m. and ending at midnight (due to a "curfew" that's in place courtesy of Pipeline's management). Tickets are $20; call 589-1999 ...

BUT DON'T wait until Saturday night to start your weekend -- there's lots to do tomorrow around town as well.

Check out Don Ho's starting at 10 p.m. for "Angel Magik," a hip-hop, reggae/dancehall and Jawaiian concert featuring a couple of quality local acts, in addition to some guest artists.

Holding it down for the 808 state are Kimo and MC Trace, Ooklah the Moc and Red Degree. They'll be joined by "the West Coast's undisputed reggae dancehall champion," MC Wicked YB and DJs Jah Kno, Ice Water and Shingo. JK Productions and Magik Entertainment will also be in the house, holding an open casting call for models.

Ten bucks gets you into this one; call 528-0807 ...

ANOTHER concert worth checking out tomorrow night is the Quintessentials CD release party at the club formerly known as Tabu (it's since gone back to being called Pink Cadillac).

Joining the local punk band in celebrating their new album, "Pentagonal Revisionism," are Chain Shot, Extra Stout, Vax, 2face4 and 8mm Overdose. Oxnard, California-based Ill Repute is also scheduled to perform. Tickets are just $6, and all ages are welcome. Call 272-1858 ...

ALSO WORTH checking out this weekend: Spend Saturday out in the country at the second annual "Taste of Mililani," taking place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Mililani District Park ... Fishbone's Angelo Moore presents an evening of poetry and performance art as his alter-ego, DJ Madd Vibe, at Studio 1 on Saturday night at 9 p.m. ... And hip-hop heads will want to visit the Wave Waikiki starting at 10 p.m. on Sunday when Connecticut's own MC Apathy graces the stage with the likes of Emirc, Omega Cix and Fortilive ...
