Kodama in second at Ping Golf Classic

University of Hawaii golfer Matt Kodama is one stroke off the lead after two rounds at the Ping Golf Cougar Classic in Provo, Utah.

The senior finished the day with a 7-under 137, behind Chris Baryla of UTEP. Also competing for UH were Kellen-Floyd Asao (T32, 146), Cody Wolfenbarger (T57, 150), James Beston (T69, 154) and Manarii Gauthier (76, 158).

Hawaii is in 11th place with a total of 587. Utah leads at 568.

Hawaii sets relay record

The Rainbow Wahine track and field team set a school record and posted an NCAA regional qualifying standard at the 95th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, yesterday.

The distance medley relay team of Kelly Young, Carolyn Berger, Ashley Monfort and Dana Buchanan set the record in 11 minutes, 39.26 seconds to finish fifth overall. Their mark surpassed the old record by 30 seconds.

Young picked up her second regional qualifying mark of the season in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:00.18. She has already qualified for the regional meet in the 800-meter run.

Also at the Drake Relays, Tasha Monroe ran the 100 in 11.99 seconds while Robin McRobbie was 16th in the 3,000 steeplechase with a time of 11:24.96.

There are 8,512 high school and college athletes from 794 teams competing in the three-day event.

UH also at Triton: Jenn Bell placed second in the 5,000-meter run at the Triton Invitational yesterday in La Jolla, Calif., with a time of 18:05.15. Shayne Enright finished fourth in the event, followed by Heidi Frank and Carin Patterson.

Also competing for UH were Hannah Eberhard and Monica Su in the 3,000 steeplechase and Alexis Frederick and Novelle Murray in the hammer throw.
