Rainbow Wahine fall to fifth

The Rainbow Wahine golf team dropped one spot to fifth place after round two of the Western Athletic Conference Championship in El Paso, Texas.

Two Hawaii golfers remained in the top 10 with freshmen Sara Odelius tied for seventh and Dale Gammie 10th. Odelius shot a three-over-par 75 to finish the day at 152 while Gammie shot a 12-over-par 84 to finish at 153.

Also competing for UH are Rene Krause (T25, 161), Tara Chappell (30, 163) and Megan Stoddart (34, 172).

San Jose State continues to lead the seven-team field with a score of 600, but Tulsa is only one stroke behind. Hawaii is at 629, just seven strokes behind Southern Methodist. Ashely Gomes of San Jose State leads the field at 141.

The tournament finishes today at the Underwood Golf Course.

Hawaii hosting sailing championships

The Hawaii sailing team has been selected to host the Pacific Coast Championships at Keehi Lagoon this weekend.

The races will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and features programs such as No. 7 Southern California, No. 8 Stanford, No. 14 UC Santa Barbara and No. 12 Hawaii.

Four U.S. Open qualifiers scheduled

Local golfers can attempt to qualify for this year's U.S. Open at four tournaments to be held in Hawaii starting next month.

The local qualifiers are set for May 15 at the Kaanapali Golf Course on Maui, May 18 at Poipu Bay Resort on Kauai and May 20 at Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu. A U.S. Open sectional qualifier will be held June 7 at Turtle Bay.

Golfers with a handicap index of 1.4 or lower are eligible to enter the qualifying events. The deadline to enter is April 28.

Taekwondo school to host agility clinics

Oahu Taekwondo Center in Aiea will host the Progression Sports ASEP (Agility, Speed and Explosive Power) series this weekend.

Scott Fujii, a former national champion, will lead the clinics which will cover training concepts and drills (session I) and application to Taekwondo (session II). The clinics are open to children and adults. The registration fee is $50 for one session and $85 for two. For more information, call Brian McCutcheon at 486-2500.

Bender misses practice because of illness

Hawaii opposite Matt Bender did not practice yesterday due to illness. The 6-foot-3 sophomore had been battling a cold and was given practice off to rest. Bender is expected back today and will travel for the fifth-ranked Warriors' first-round Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at No. 3 UCLA on Saturday. Bender is third on the team in kills with 3.11 per game.

Also, freshman Dio Dante will have surgery on his broken right pinkie at the end of the season. An earlier report said sophomore Mauli'a LaBarre was hampered by a broken pinkie.
