Claim property held
by state by tomorrow

Question: Usually, in February, a listing of unclaimed property is printed. Do you happen to know what day it was printed this year?

Answer: The state Department of Budget & Finance had been publishing a legal notice to alert people to so-called "abandoned" or unclaimed property valued at $100 or more, once a year, in newspapers around the state.

However, it was getting too costly to publish the lengthy list of names, which run into the tens of thousands, according to an official with the department's Unclaimed Property Program.

This year, it was decided to give the public notice of where to go to find out if they may be missing out on personal property -- not real property -- such as un-cashed checks, dormant bank accounts, certificates of deposit, stock certificates, insurance refunds, contents of safe deposit boxes, etc.

A notice to "persons appearing to be owners of abandoned property" was published on Wednesday, Feb. 25, and again on Sunday, Feb. 29, in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, the Honolulu Advertiser, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald, West Hawaii Today, the Garden Island and the Maui News.

It said the list of owner names could be viewed on the Internet at www.state.hi.us/budget/ uncprop/uncprop.htm, as well as at the Unclaimed Property Program office, 250 S. Hotel St., Room 304; the Hawaii State Library's Hawaii and Pacific Section; the Hilo, Hawaii Kai, Kahului, Kailua, Kaimuki, Kaneohe, Lihue, McCully, Mililani, Pearl City, Salt Lake and Waianae libraries; and the University of Hawaii-Manoa's Hamilton Library.

If your name is among those listed, you have until tomorrow to provide proof of claim to the holder of the property. If no claim is made by the deadline, or the proof of claim is not established satisfactorily, the property will be turned over to the state director of finance by May 3. After that, all claims have to be submitted to the finance director.

Information about the property being held can be obtained by writing to the Unclaimed Property Program, State of Hawaii, P.O. Box 150, Honolulu, HI 96810; by calling 586-1589; or by e-mailing unclaimedproperty @hawaii.gov.

On the neighbor islands, people can call 808-274-3141 (Kauai), 808-984-2400 (Maui) and 808-974-4000 (Big Island). After dialing the local number, dial 61589 after hearing the voice prompt.

Molokai and Lanai residents should call 800-GOV-INHI (800-468-4644).

To the driver of a Dodge Stealth. I hope you see this because not one light works on the back of your car. I had to follow you through thick traffic all the way through Aiea recently. Please be aware that your brake lights are not working at all. It's very dangerous. -- No name

Call police at 911 if you think there is an imminent danger; otherwise, contact your district police station with specific information about the vehicle ("Kokua Line," April 13) and police can follow up with the registered owner.
