(Bess Press, $4.95 ea.)

A couple of unusual printing jobs by Bess Press this week -- the "Alphabets" are charming little books that feature the letters kicking off native words, and colorfully illustrated with sketches by kids from around the Pacific. All of these sites are U.S.-affiliated in some way, and funding is partially underwritten by the U.S. Department of Education, Pacific Regional Education Laboratory.

"Hanauma Bay Hawai'i Guides"
by Susan Scott, photographs by
D.R. and T.L. Schrichte
(Bess Press, $4.95)

"Hanauma Bay," compiled by Star-Bulletin ocean writer Susan Scott, is the first in a series of fold-out, weather-resistant backpocket guides developed by Bess. It's colorful, well-printed, contains a wealth of information at a reasonable price and seems virtually indestructable. The series is off to a good start.
