Lee in the lead at Mid-Pac Open

Regan Lee shot a 73 yesterday to take a two-stroke lead after yesterday's second round of the Mid-Pacific Open.

Casey Nakama, who was tied with Lee for first after Thursday's first round, is two strokes back at 146, followed by George Sinnott, Katsuhiro Miura, Kevin Hayashi and Louie Lee at 148.

Jonathan Mathias is four strokes ahead of the field in the championship flight at 144 while Wade Nakamura leads the A-flight at 157 and Kiyoshi Yada is in front of the B-flight at 168.

The tournament runs through tomorrow.

Local kayakers win gold

Lauren Spalding of Maui and Kathy Colin of Oahu won the gold medal at the U.S. Olympic Canoe & Kayak Trials yesterday at Lake Merritt, Calif.

The duo clocked in at 1:52.86 in the K-2 race and will compete in tomorrow's K-4 race with Marie Mijalis and Carrie Johnson.

The winners of the Olympic trials compete at the Olympic qualifying race later this month in Brazil for a shot at the summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.

Vulcans sweep Swords

The UH Hilo softball team swept a pair of PacWest games from Chaminade yesterday at Palolo Field.

The Vulcans took the first game 4-0 in 10 innings after Lisa Jackson's bases-loaded double drove in three runs. Pitcher Sarah Steele struck out nine and gave up two hits for the complete-game win.

In the second game, Natalie Fujimoto batted 3-for-4 and hit a two-run homer in a 6-1 win. Tara Hiramatsu went 2-for-4 to lead the Silverswords.

UH Hilo improved to 24-14 overall, 10-2 in the PacWest while Chaminade fell to 10-29 overall, 6-12 in the PacWest.

Sea Warriors blank 'Bows

Top-ranked Hawaii Pacific swept the Hawaii men's tennis team 7-0 at the Central Oahu Tennis Complex yesterday.

The Sea Warriors, ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II, dropped all but one doubles match to the Rainbow Warriors. Gabor Jaross was the only HPU player who didn't win in straight sets, defeating Byron Weinberg 6-1, 3-6, 10-7.

The Sea Warriors improved to 21-0 while Hawaii fell to 8-14.

UH women fall: The Rainbow Wahine women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 match at Cal State Fullerton yesterday.

Hawaii lost two of three doubles matches and lost the deciding singles match when Justine Boutet fell to Ioana Sisoe 6-4, 6-1. The win gave the Titans (12-10) their first winning season since the 1994-95 season. Hawaii (8-13) is 0-2 on their road trip and wraps up the three-day run at UC Riverside today.

USC tops Hawaii water polo

Sophomore Kristy Bagnell scored on the Hawaii water polo team's first possession, but USC roared back to beat the Wahine 12-5 yesterday in Los Angeles.

After Hawaii went up 2-1, the Women of Troy scored seven unanswered goals to take the commanding lead. Hawaii dropped to 10-10 overall and 4-6 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

Kamehameha day at Quarterback Club

Kamehameha High School principal and athletic directors Blane Gaison and Erv Kau will be the featured speakers at Monday's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Club member Robert Young will join them at the podium.

Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda restaurant in Honolulu with the program to follow at noon.
