Trias spared spot
in ‘Idol’s’ bottom 3

Once again, Hawaii can breathe a collective sigh of relief.

American Idol A week after being declared in the bottom three on "American Idol," Mililani's Jasmine Trias steered clear of the cellar in her bid to advance to the next round. Instead, John Stevens, of East Amherst, N.Y.; Jon Peter Lewis, of Rexburg, Idaho; and Diana DeGarmo, of Snellville, Ga., found themselves in the drop zone by virtue of receiving the fewest endorsements during Wednesday night's call-in vote.

Lewis, who gained approval from three-quarters of the judging panel Wednesday evening for his somewhat ungainly rendition of "Jailhouse Rock," received the least number of votes from viewers, and thus was eliminated.

While JPL fans bemoaned their candidate's dismissal on "American Idol's" Internet message board, supporters of Hawaii's "American Idol" contestants Trias and last week's casualty, Camile Velasco, of Haiku, Maui, rejoiced in knowing the islands' remaining representative would move on.

According to Verizon Hawaii, call attempts from the Aloha State to "American Idol" numbers totaled 3.8 million.

"That tells me the local vote is still strong," said Cedrick Pila, 22, of Kapolei, a devout "AI" viewer who until last week split his phone votes between Trias and Velasco. "But honestly, I think it also means people on the mainland are turning on to her and keeping her in the competition.

"It seems to me like she really listens to what the judges say and tries to make adjustments to her game," he said. "If she keeps taking their advice and (her fans) keep voting for her, anything can happen."
