Mason wins playoff

Nick Mason won the Buzzini/Stanislaus Golf Invitational in a playoff yesterday at Turlock, Calif., building on an already impressive season.

The UH-Hilo junior shot a record-breaking 65 in the second round to set a tournament single-round scoring record and won the tiebreaker by having the most recent lower round score over Ryan Thornberry of Cal State Stanislaus.

On Monday, Mason shot an opening round of 73 and stormed back with a 65.

Mason, who finished second at the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate earlier this year, also won the Hilo Invitational to become the first amateur to win the event.

Other UHH participants were Joseph Saliba (T35, 225), Kevin Shimomura (T43, 228), Colin Gilliam (T57, 232) and Tysen Shinaut (T64, 234).

UC Davis won the team competition with a score of 865, two strokes over Cal State Stanislaus. The Vulcans finished in seventh place at 891.

Baseball Vulcans earn honors

UH-Hilo baseball players Kaliko Oligo and Clay Daugherty were named NCAA Division I Independent Baseball Player and Co-Pitcher of the Week yesterday.

Oligo batted .733 (11-for-15) while also accounting for six runs, as Hilo split a four-game series with Sacramento State last week.

Daugherty made the final home start of his collegiate career a memorable one as he tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout. He leads the Vulcan pitching staff with a 4.44 ERA and has a 2-5 record.

The Vulcans (9-34) play at Hawaii Pacific (22-21) next Saturday and Sunday.
