Aiea beats rival
Pearl City

Hitting took center stage yesterday in the continuation of a rivalry that has its roots in solid pitching and fundamentally sound defense.

Aiea edged visiting Pearl City 10-8 to improve to 4-1 in Oahu Interscholastic Association West Division baseball.

Na Alii broke a 7-all tie and took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth on Herbert Chung's two-run single to right.

Chung, however, almost didn't get a chance to play the hero. Aaron Asher, the batter immediately preceding Chung, popped into what appeared to be the third out, but Pearl City catcher Corey Giammalvo was called for interference. Asher was awarded a hit, loading the bases and setting the stage for Chung's timely hit.

"We didn't have any interference calls against us in the preseason or in any game so far," said Chargers coach Melvin Seki, whose team dropped to 3-1. "That interference call today really hurt us."

Aiea led most of the way, but couldn't keep Pearl City from scratching back. Lance Powell's two-run single keyed a four-run first inning and Dylan Libadisos jacked a two-run triple to center for a 7-3 lead after three innings.

Giammalvo's two-run double in the third kept the Chargers' offense on track and Michael Higa tripled down the left-field line to drive home two of the visitors' three runs in the fourth to make it a 7-6 ballgame.

Casey Fujishige doubled and eventually scored on an error in the fifth for the 7-all tie.

"The way Pearl City played, they deserved to win every bit as much as we did," Aiea coach Ryan Kato said.

Na Alii stole four bases in the first two innings, but they also committed three errors in the game, which concerns Kato.

"Our whole offense is based on being as aggressive as possible," he said. "That's how this team has fun. It's not just a station-to-station game. The most frustrating part is the errors. That's something we can control and that's what I talked to them about to reinforce defense after the game. Hitting a pitcher is one thing and it can be tough to do and something you can't control. But with ground balls and throws, that's something where you expect something close to perfection."

Higa tagged the ball four times and finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and a triple for the Chargers.

"He'll be in my nightmares tonight," Kato said.

Seki spoke glowingly of his leadoff hitter, who will walk on at UH-Hilo next year.

"The game he had was typical Michael Higa. I hope (Vulcans coach) Joey Estrella takes a good look at him."

Kepa Wong singled and scored Aiea's final run in the bottom of the sixth on Pearl City's third error of the game.

Blake Lamug, who went 2 1/3 innings in relief of Blaze Moleta, gave up one unearned run and earned the pitching win.

"We all wanted this game," Lamug said. "I expected it to be close, but not this much scoring."

3 ADs among
candidates to run BIIF

Three athletic directors are among the candidates for the position of Big Island Interscholastic Federation executive secretary, according to a source close to the situation.

Last night, Konawaena AD Lyle Crozier confirmed that he applied for the job, while the source said Waiakea AD Ken Yamase and Hana AD Keith Morioka have also applied.

The Department of Education will conduct interviews for the position -- left vacant when Roy Fujimoto retired last year -- starting Monday. The DOE's Wendell Staszkow, who is involved with the process, declined to release names of the applicants.

Even though he's retired, Fujimoto continues to fill the BIIF executive secretary post until a new hire is made.

Crozier, who has been the Konawaena AD for 15 years, looks at the possible job opportunity as a "new challenge."

"It's getting to be a pretty big league and it's changed a lot in recent years," he said.
