Ring, Roumain lose in AVP semifinal

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. » Former Hawaii volleyball player Jason Ring and partner George Roumain saw their upset ride end yesterday in the semifinals of the AVP Nissan Series beach volleyball opener.

Seeded 13th, Ring and Roumain fell to No. 3 seeds Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jennings 23-21, 21-19. Fuerbringer-Jennings went on to lose in the Ft. Lauderdale Open final to Sean Rosenthal-Larry Witt 21-17, 21-14.

Ring and Roumain tied for third with former UH player Sean Scott and his partner, Todd Rogers. The teams split $5,825.

Finishing fifth was former Punahou/UCLA player Stein Metzger, who teamed with Dax Holdren. Tied for seventh was former Punahou/Stanford player Mike Lambert, who paired with Karch Kiraly.

Cal Poly sweeps UH Hilo in baseball

KAILUA-KONA » Cal Poly San Luis Obispo scored seven runs in the top of the third inning en route to a 14-4 nonconference baseball victory over Hawaii-Hilo yesterday at Simmons Field.

The win completed a four-game sweep by the Mustangs (28-12-1) over the Vulcans (7-32). David Chu and Sean Tamura both paired hits for Hilo, which was outhit 14-4.

The Vulcans next host Sacramento State in a three-game series that opens Friday.

Sea Warriors fall to Grand Canyon in softball

MODESTO, Calif. » Grand Canyon scored a run in the top of the ninth to edge Hawaii Pacific 5-4 in the silver championship bracket yesterday at the Easton Tournament of Champions.

Freshman second baseman Kara Wedemeyer and senior shortstop Brandy Choy Foo led the Sea Warriors offensively with two hits against the Lady Antelopes.

The Sea Warriors (15-8) finished the tournament with a 2-3 record. HPU begins a four-game Pacific West Conference series at Western New Mexico tomorrow.

Vulcans lose heartbreaker to Yellowjackets : Montana State University-Billings squeaked out a 3-1 victory over Hawaii-Hilo in eight innings yesterday in a silver-bracket game at the Easton Tournament of Champions.

The Vulcans (22-14) had three more hits than the Yellowjackets (three) but couldn't capitalize on several scoring opportunities, stranding eight runners in the game. UHH could have evened the score in the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded but Yellowjackets pitcher Joey Ehnes (four hits, eight strikeouts) got Natalie Fujimoto to ground out to end the game.

Ehnes and UHH's Sarah Steele had an excellent pitching battle most of the game. Steele had surrendered just one hit in seven innings, but the Vulcans didn't have the offense she needed for the win as UHH finished the tournament with a 2-3 record.

Silverswords held scoreless : San Francisco State defeated Chaminade 3-0 yesterday at the Easton Tournament of Champions.

Michelle Oxtoby had two of the Silverswords' five hits.

The Silverswords (9-26) were the only team fromHawaii that advanced into the gold championship bracket. Chaminade finished the tournament with a 2-3 mark, with RachelLacar making the all-tournament team.

Vulcans finish tournament undefeated

POMONA, Calif. » The Hawaii-Hilo women's tennis team dominated Cal Poly Pomona 8-1 yesterday at the Xenia Anastasiadou Memorial Tournament.

The Vulcans swept the singles matches and won 2 of 3 doubles matches to finish the three-day tournament with a 3-0 mark.

Katrina Holmberg, a sophomore for Pomona and graduate of King Kekaulike High School on Maui, teamed up with Dehlia Feliz for the Broncos' doubles win.

The Vulcans, ranked No. 21 in NCAA Division II, went 4-0 on their road trip, including a win at No. 16 UC-San Diego earlier last week.
