Kauai crews start work on emergency road
LIHUE >> An emergency detour using an old cane haul road will allow motorists to detour from the Kuhio Highway in the event of accidents or hazardous waste spills.
The refurbishing of three miles of an old dirt road links Hanamaulu to Kuhio Highway.
State and county road crews have been working on the route since last week. The initial cost of repairing the road will be $10,000, and annual maintenance is budgeted for $3,000. The detour will be gated and locked when it is not needed.
A similar detour is planned in the Koloa area.
'Star Party' rescheduled for tomorrow night
An "Ultimate Star Party" that was rained out Friday to see five planets grouped in the same part of the sky has been rescheduled for tomorrow night by the Bishop Museum planetarium.
The free event, from 7 to 9 p.m., will give residents a "last-minute glance at the planets," said planetarium manager Carolyn Kaichi. There will be no program or exhibits, but the Hawaiian Astronomical Society will provide telescopes to see Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter together.
