Tabion throws no-hitter for Wahine

Shannon Tabion pitched a no-hitter as the Rainbow Wahine softball team (21-19) swept a doubleheader against Texas-El Paso yesterday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Hawaii shut out UTEP 6-0 and 10-0 to win its first two Western Athletic Conference contests of the season.

Melissa Coogan allowed just two hits and struck out six and senior April Crowell blasted a two-out, three-run shot over the center-field wall in the first inning of the first game.

Tabion retired 15 of the 16 batters she faced as the second game ended in the fifth inning on the eight-run mercy rule. Tabion had a perfect game until the fourth inning, when Laura Joiner reached on an error. The Miners are 7-27.

Hilo takes two: The Hawaii-Hilo softball team won two games at the Easton Tournament of Champions in Modesto, Calif., yesterday. The Vulcans defeated UC San Diego 8-4 in the first game and Sonoma State 3-0 in the nightcap.

Islanders bring back Japanese linebacker

The Hawaiian Islanders arenafootball2 team acquired Takamasa Suzuki, a 6-foot-1, 240-pound fullback/linebacker, from the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings yesterday. It is his second stint with the Islanders, as Suzuki attended the Islanders' training camp two years ago. Suzuki was a member of the Seagulls, the 2002 Tokyo Super Bowl Champions.

Seasiders remain perfect

The Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis team used another dominating performance for its 89th consecutive dual match win yesterday. The Seasiders routed No. 16 UC San Diego 9-0 to improve to 23-0 this season.

BYUH men bounce back: The third-ranked Seasider men's tennis team defeated Delta State 6-0 to snap a two-match losing streak. BYUH won the doubles point and three singles matches.

HPU cruises: The No. 1 Hawaii Pacific men's tennis team had little trouble against Sonoma State yesterday. The Sea Warriors won their 15th match in a row as they handily defeated the Seawolves 9-0 at the Oahu Club.

Chrisman nabs D-II All-America honor

BYUH junior Jake Chrisman became a Bulletin Division II honorable mention All-American yesterday. The forward was the only Pacific West Conference player to earn the distinction.

Chrisman averaged 23.3 points a game and 5.7 rebounds. He led the conference in scoring and was eighth nationally.

Coyotes defeat Sea Warriors again

The Hawaii Pacific baseball team fell short yesterday as the Sea Warriors lost to Cal State San Bernardino 10-8 in a nonconference game at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.

HPU left the tying run on base for the second straight night.

Hilo loses again: At Wong Stadium, the Hawaii-Hilo baseball team dropped its 29th game of the season yesterday, losing 7-1 to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The Vulcans are 7-29, while Poly improved to 25-12.

HPU cheerleaders are champs again

The Hawaii Pacific University captured first at the Chick-fil-A National Cheerleaders Association collegiate championships yesterday.

The co-ed squad received a 9.45 from judges and finished with a final score of 9.95 to win its second consecutive NCA championship in Division II cheer. HPU beat out 13 other squads for the Division II championship.

The HPU all-girl cheer team also won its division. The HPU dance team (8.28) finished second out of 18 teams in the Dance Division II competition.
