Sewage spill closes
Maui’s Iao Stream

WAILUKU >> Maui County officials are advising people not to go into the water near Iao Stream and its ocean outlet in Central Maui due to an estimated spill of 200,000 to 300,000 gallons of untreated sewage.

The spill was discovered about noon Tuesday east of Piihana Road. County spokeswoman Ellen Pelissero said the county believes the spill took place during several days.

"It appears that the majority of the raw waste water infiltrated into the surrounding area and did not reach the ocean," Pelissero said.

Pelissero said a blockage in the main line that caused the spill was cleared and the overflow stopped in 90 minutes.

She said the county will continue to test the water in Iao Stream and the ocean for several days to determine levels of fecal contamination.
