Man escapes
Kauai police
after chase

LIHUE >> A man led Kauai police on a wild ride back and forth through South Kauai on Tuesday before his car bogged down in a mudhole -- then he escaped on foot.

The Kauai Police Department would not identify the man or say why he is wanted.

They said they chased the same man last week but broke off the pursuit when speeds became so high and traffic so congested that there was a danger to other vehicles.

About 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, officers spotted the man driving in Koloa.

They chased him north on Koloa Road to King Kaumualii Highway, then west on the highway through Kalaheo and Port Allen, and Port Allen to Kaumakani, a distance of about 12 miles.

At Kaumakani he turned around and went back the way he came with police still in pursuit. He sped through the Poipu resort area and then to the remote Mahaulepu area, where his car became stuck in the mud. The man abandoned the vehicle and disappeared in the brush.

Kauai police searched for the man with a helicopter and officers from both the Lihue and Waimea districts but were unable to pick up his trail.

Police said numerous vehicles were run off the road during the chase, but they have had no reports that any were damaged.
