Simon said Velasco
would see 1 more week

She and Jasmine Trias
survived the latest round

For a second week, Paula Abdul saw a marked improvement in Camile Velasco's performance on "American Idol."

Though her fellow evaluators Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell did not agree with Abdul's assessment, the nation apparently did. The results of Tuesday evening's call-in voting, announced last night on national television, refuted recent speculation on "AI's" Internet message boards that Maui's Velasco would wind up in the bottom three, or worse, booted off the show. Instead, Velasco stayed clear of the drop zone .

"I thought she did very well," said Miguel Morales, a family friend from Wailuku, Maui. "She took the judges' advice and she went a little bit out of her comfort zone. She showed that every time they suggest something to her, she would at least give it a shot. She had fun doing it and whatever they say at the end of her performance, it's like, 'Hey, I had fun, I gave it my all.' "

Mililani's Jasmine Trias was also declared safe last night. The Maryknoll student worked the crowd Tuesday night in a polished stage performance, en route to receiving largely positive comments from the judges. "Everybody thought she did really good," remarked her father Rudy Trias, in a phone call from Los Angeles, where he has watched each of his daughter's performances since she reached the final 12.

"She wanted to come out better this week with something a little upbeat. She's really happy," he said.

In a development that nearly mirrored results two weeks ago, Jennifer Hudson of Chicago, Ill., and Amy Adams of Bakersfield, Calif., wound up in the bottom three again. LaToya London of Oakland, Calif., who had received nothing but high praise from all three "AI" judges each time she took up the mic, found herself lumped in with Hudson and Adams. After several tense minutes, it was announced that Adams would be the third of the 12 finalists to leave the show.

Verizon Hawaii reported yesterday that its land-line calls to the "American Idol" numbers from Hawaii totalled 926,878. While that figure was lower than last week's 1.68 million and 2.98 million from two weeks ago, it still represents the third largest volume of calls for that time period in Verizon's nationwide network, behind the states of New York and New Jersey.
