Rainbow Wahine strike out 15 times

The University of Hawaii softball team split its first two games yesterday at the Stanford Classic in Palo Alto, Calif., beating Illinois 4-0 and losing 1-0 to No. 10 Stanford.

Against the Illini, Shannon Tabion gave up just two hits, both singles, walked three and struck out one for the win.

The Rainbow Wahine (17-17) face BYU and UC Riverside today.

Seasiders split: Sarah Tingey scored from first base after three wild pitches in the fifth inning as the BYU-Hawaii softball team beat Columbia College (MO) 1-0 yesterday in Laie.

BYUH (10-15) dropped the first game of the doubleheader 6-1.

Thew scores twice for swim team

The University of Hawaii's Peter Thew finished 13th in the 200-meter freestyle and helped the 800 freestyle relay team to a 13th place finish at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at East Meadow, N.Y., yesterday.

Thew's time of 1:47.28 earned him All-America honorable mention honors while the relay squad of Thew, Cheyne Bloch, Andrew Affleck and Kurt Boehm clocked in at 7:16.37.

UH picked up points with both finishes as the Rainbow Warriors stand in 24th place with 14 points. Auburn leads with 435.

Bears bite Rainbow Warriors

The Hawaii men's tennis team fell to SW Missouri State 5-2 at the Central Oahu Regional Park Tennis Complex yesterday.

Hawaii's Ryan Sceats defeated Jiri Spousta at No. 1 singles 7-6 (4), 0-6, 17-15. UH (6-12) picked up another point with wins in two of the three doubles matches.

Sea Warriors split with Broncos

Kai Austin pitched a four-hitter and Alika Kuraoka hit the game-winner over the center-field fence as the Hawaii Pacific baseball team beat Cal Poly Pomona 3-2 yesterday at Pomona, Calif.

HPU (15-16) fell to Pomona 10-3 in the first game of the doubleheader. Both teams play again today.

Vulcans drop another double dip

David Chu rapped out five hits in nine at-bats, but the Hawaii-Hilo baseball team still lost a doubleheader 9-1 and 6-5 to UC Riverside at Kailua-Kona yesterday.

The Vulcans dropped to 7-24 with the sweep, and continue the series with the Highlanders (16-11) today and tomorrow.
