Musical production recreates Christ's life

Fifty local musicians, vocalists and performers, representing six Windward Oahu churches, will take part in an outdoor performance of "The Witness," a portrayal of Christ's life, death and resurrection.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. April 1-4 and April 8-11 at the KEY Project in Kaneohe, 47-200 Waihee Road. The public is invited to attend for free.

The production, featuring live animals, is presented by Waiola Worship Center, church coalition Ke Kumu Ola O Kahalu'u, and Pacific Island Praise, a Christian theater arts ministry under the direction of Kalani Poomaihealani.

Missionary speaks at Methodist festival

The Rev. Sandra Olewine, a Methodist missionary to Jerusalem, Palestine and Israel, will be the featured speaker at today's Hawaii District Mission Festival at the Wahiawa United Methodist Church.

Other speakers include Lilia Fernandez, who will discuss Cuba and living in an interfaith community, and the Rev. Barbara Ripple, on the peace and justice issues of the Exodus. The festival will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Olewine, has been on the board of Global Ministries as the United Methodist Liaison to Jerusalem since 1996. A clergy member of the California Pacific Conference, she works from Christmas Lutheran Church in Bethlehem.

In partnership with Catholic Relief Services and the Presbyterian Church of the United States, she has accompanied hundreds of pilgrims, pastors, church leaders and others in their interactions with Palestinians, Israelis, Christians, Jews and Muslims.

Olewine describes her primary responsibility as helping United Methodists "hear the voices of those silenced or ignored, whether Palestinian or Israeli."

While it is too late to register for the festival luncheon, interested persons are welcome to come and hear the speakers.

Musicians to perform at Kawaiahao services

Some of Hawaii's top jazz musicians will perform at Kawaiahao Church at noon Wednesday and April 7 during the Lenten Season.

Musicians include pianists Betty Loo Taylor and Steve Jones, with sax players Gabe Baltazar, Billy Beimes, trumpet player Di Shannon Higa, and vocalists Rachel Gonzales, Clayton Nalua'i, Rocky Brown and Star Williams.

The Rev. Jim Halfaker will share brief thoughts on the meaning of Lent, the period of fasting and getting closer to God before Easter.

St. Andrew's Cathedral spotlights guest cellist

The St. Andrew's Cathedral on Queen Emma Square will feature guest artist Ellen Dressler-Moryl, a cellist, at its organ recital and choral evensong at 7:30 p.m. April 4.

She is the director of the Office of Cultural Affairs for the city of Charleston, S.C., and director of the Piccolo Spoleto Festival of music and arts.

Dressler-Moryl will present repertoire from the 16th through 20th centuries reflective of Holy Week themes, including the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the institution of the Lord's supper, and Jesus' Passion and death.

Concluding the program will be the "Praise to the Eternity of Jesus" from Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time.

Calabash offerings will be received.
