Kai scores in win

JIANGSU, China » Natasha Kai scored her second goal for the United States Under 21 team yesterday. It came in the 60th minute of a 2-0 victory over the Chinese Youth National Team at the Jiangsu Huaian Sports Stadium.

After a scoreless first half, the University of Hawaii sophomore put USA ahead 15 minutes into the second half with her unassisted goal.

Heather O'Reilly scored the second goal seven minutes later.

The U-21 team plays its final match Sunday against the Chinese Women's National Team.

All-American honors for UH swimmers

The University of Hawaii men's 400-meter medley relay team earned All-America honorable mention after finishing 16th with a time of 3:36.93 after the first day of the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in East Meadow, N.Y.

Peter Thew, Cheyne Bloch, Nimrod Palma and Kurt Boehm were on the relay team.

Competing in the preliminaries yesterday were Andrew Affleck and Boehm in the 400 free, Bloch and Tudor Ignat in the 200 individual medley and Michael Gowdy in the 3-meter dive.

As a team, Hawaii is in 28th place with two points. Auburn leads the competition with 211. The championships run through tomorrow.

Hawaii water polo sinks UCSB

The Rainbow Wahine water polo team outscored the UCSB Gauchos 3-2 in the fourth quarter to rally for a 7-6 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win last night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Beth Novick and Makana Whitford each scored two goals for Hawaii (9-8, 3-4). UCSB dropped to 11-8 overall, 2-3 in the MPSF.

Former Buffanblu a winner

Honolulu's Parker McLachlin won his first pro golf tournament yesterday at the Redhawk Golf Club in Temecula Valley (Calif.).

McLachlin, who turned pro last August, was competing in an A.G. Spanos mini-tour event. The former Punahou standout got off to a blistering start in the three-day tournament, which started Tuesday with three birdies and an ace on the front nine. He carded a 69-69-72 to finish a stroke ahead of Alex Rodger (71-72-68) and Mark Worthington (72-67-72) in the $100,000 event. McLachlin earned a $15,000 paycheck for the tournament.
