Campbell's Kendall Hodson turned a double play against Pearl City's Michael Higa yesterday.

Ganigan shuts
down Campbell

Minor adjustments can have major impact.

Pearl City southpaw Tony Ganigan walked three batters in the first inning, but thanks to a tip from catcher Corey Giammalvo, he finished with a complete-game, two-hit 4-0 victory over Campbell in an Oahu Interscholastic Association baseball opener yesterday in Ewa Beach.

"My elbow was dropping too low," Ganigan said about his first-inning problems. "But Corey told me to raise it up. I couldn't tell what was wrong."

Ganigan also struck out the side in that first frame and was never seriously threatened after that in a duel against the Sabers' Tristan Bailey.

Bailey gave up a run in the first and turned in a solid performance for most of the duration -- except for a three-run thumping in the fourth.

"In that inning, he (Bailey) had two strikes on batters and ended up leaving a fastball up or hanging a curve over the plate," new Campbell coach Rory Pico said. "Pearl City is a good contact-hitting team and took advantage of it."

That fourth inning was a game-breaker, as the Chargers erupted for four hits, including two-out, bases-loaded RBI singles by Devin Fukunaga and Mike Higa. The Chargers also scored on a wild pitch.

"Fukunaga's hit (for a 2-0 lead) up the middle bailed us out in that inning," Pearl City coach Melvin Seki said. "Before he came up, we had a pop-up to the catcher (by Kyle Fukuda for the second out)."

Higa finished with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, including a double to lead off the game. In the third inning, he unleashed a deep drive to center that Campbell's Victor Cachuela nabbed.

"Mike is one of the more exciting players you're going to see this year," Seki said.

After his double, Higa made it 1-0 by scoring on a Campbell infield error. The Sabers committed three fielding mistakes in the contest.

"We have a lot of work to do, that's for sure," Pico said. "Tony hit his spots and made good pitches when he needed them. We've got to learn to adjust better. It wasn't until the end of the game when we started taking a lot better hacks at the ball. It was too late. But it's hard to stay aggressive when you're down 4-0."

Campbell catcher Ian Pantorilla doubled to lead off the sixth, but Ganigan got the next three batters out. Pake Coloma had the Sabers' only other hit.

Seki is glad to be past Campbell on the OIA West schedule.

"We know Tristan is one of the best pitchers in the state," said Seki. "And it's a credit to our kids for sticking in there against him," he said.
