Punk rock showdown

WANT TO get a taste of the best punk rock Hawaii has to offer?

Head into Kalihi tomorrow night for an Oahu vs. Maui showdown at the X-Factory starting at 6:30 p.m.

Five bands will play during the all-ages show -- representing Oahu are Battle Royale, Audience of One and newcomers Harrison, while Maui counters with Fire Never Fading and E5:19.

Tickets are just $5 for this one; call 330-6616 ...

ANOTHER HAWAII resident made it onto national television this week.

Jack Rosenzweig, who serves as deputy attorney general, appeared on the quiz show "Jeopardy!" yesterday. The 58-year-old said in a release that he was trying to convince himself that "bald old guys can still prevail," but wished that he'd gotten the chance a couple decades earlier.

Makes you wonder if Rosenzweig would have given "American Idol" a shot if he were around Camile Velasco and Jasmine Trias' age ...

SPOKEN WORD poet Steve Kealoha Wong celebrates a year of his "First Thursdays" poetry slam next week, but you'll want to stop by Studio 1 tonight for a taste of his first full-length CD, titled "Kealoha."

Doors open at 8:15 tonight, with performances by 104.3 XME's Hawaiian Ryan, Selah Geissler and Gloria Baraquio. Hapa's Barry Flanagan and hip-hop band Communication will also be on stage during the evening.

Cover for the party is $15, but everyone who pays gets a copy of the new CD to take home. Call 387-9664 ...

ALOHA STADIUM hosts the annual Sports Carnival again this weekend, and along with the E.K. Fernandez midway of rides and games there will be some pretty good live entertainment for you to enjoy as well.

A number of local bands will perform at 7 and 10 p.m. each night at the carnival. Three Plus and Ho'onu'a are scheduled for tomorrow, with the Next Generation and the Opihi Pickers playing on Saturday, and Keahiwai teaming up with Natural Vibrations to close things out on Sunday.

Admission to the carnival is $2 for adults and $1 for keiki, so you won't break the bank checking out the entertainment. Call 682-5767 ...

TODAY ALSO marks the start of "Xentopia," a week-long celebration for World-Asia Television, a new television network aimed at the Asian market.

The Hilton Hawaiian Village serves as home base for the week, with a stage erected on the beach to host various live events. A number of local nightclubs will also take part, with Dustin Nguyen and MTV's SuChin Pak serving as hosts. Visit www.xentopia.com or call 947-7941 for a complete listing of events ...
