UH alumni work out for NFL decision-makers

Around 70 NFL scouts, player personnel directors and coaches attended a "pro day" workout for former University of Hawaii players and others in Carson, Calif., yesterday.

Head coaches Dick Vermeil (Chiefs), Jack Del Rio (Jaguars), Marvin Lewis (Bengals) and Butch Davis (Browns) attended.

Defensive tackles Isaac Sopoaga and Lance Samuseva, defensive ends Travis LaBoy, Houston Ala, Kevin Jackson and La'anui Correa, cornerback Kelvin Millhouse, wide receiver Jeremiah Cockheran and running back John West worked out, as did linebacker Joe Siofele (Arizona) and Chauncey Ako (Boise State).

Sopoaga and LaBoy followed up on eye-opening efforts at the NFL combine last month, and both are expected to be drafted, possibly in the first three rounds.

Sopoaga bench-pressed 225 pounds 40 times. He did it 42 times at the combine.

"Both had a really good day," their agent, Kenny Zuckerman said. "Isaac got on a plane after the workout and is visiting the New England Patriots."

In addition to the Patriots, the Chiefs, Titans, Bengals and Browns have expressed interest in Sopoaga, Zuckerman said. He added that LaBoy has drawn interest from the 49ers, Texans, Ravens, Rams and Jaguars.

"I think both elevated their draft status and worked out for the decision-makers," Zuckerman said. "It's like a last test drive before buying the car."

An NFL scout in attendance yesterday told the Star-Bulletin that Sopoaga and LaBoy both looked "very good." Another said Sopoaga is "a first-round talent."

LaBoy and Jackson both worked out at linebacker drills in addition to defensive end. Zuckerman said "90 percent" of the interest in LaBoy is as a defensive end.

Some scouts timed Millhouse at 4.3 in the 40, and Cockheran was clocked by some at 4.4.
