Search to resume for man lost off Big Island

Big Island fire fighters will resume the search this morning for a man in his 20s or 30s who is presumed dead after being spotted slipping under 8- to 10-foot surf in waters off Waipio Valley.

Rescue crews spotted the man in the waves but couldn't get to him, according to a Hawaii County fire dispatcher.

People on the ground and in the air searched from 2:30 p.m. until sunset for the man. They were set to resume the search at first light this morning.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service has issued a high-surf advisory through today for the east-facing shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and the Big Island.

Surf heights are estimated at between 6 and 10 feet.
