UH health chairman
steps down for move

Dr. F. DeWolfe Miller has resigned as chairman of the Public Health Science and Epidemiology Department in the University of Hawaii-Manoa's John A. Burns School of Medicine.

Miller is moving to the school's Asian-Pacific Institute of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases.

Miller, whose resignation yesterday was effective immediately, said he felt he had done a good job building up a graduate program in public health and he looks forward to opportunities in his field at the institute.

He said he will be working on developing a new program in epidemiology in emerging infectious diseases.

He has done extensive research in Egypt for more than 25 years on parasitic and infectious diseases. He is the only foreign national with approval from Egypt to examine the mummies.

When the School of Public Health was dismantled at UH in 1999, Miller made a proposal to medical school Dean Dr. Ed Cadman to start a new public health program and get it accredited.

Miller said they worked together to get an accredited program started in public health with a master's degree in epidemiology, which they did with no additional funding. A social and behavioral sciences program also has been accredited for graduate students.
