American Samoan officials visit Oahu

Dignitaries from American Samoa were scheduled to attend a church service on Oahu today for U.S. reservists from the territory who are being deployed to the Middle East.

Gov. Togiola Tulafono and Eni Faleomavaega, American Samoa's delegate to Congress, were to be among the dignitaries at the Kanana Fou Church in Waipahu, according to Lt. Col. Howard Sugai, spokesman for the Army Reserve's 9th Regional Support Command.

Sugai said he expected 350 soldiers and family members to attend the 3 p.m. service, which will be conducted in the Samoan language.

Another church service is scheduled for Wednesday at Schofield Barracks, and a formal farewell ceremony is set for Thursday at the barracks' Sills Field, he said.

The members of the Army Reserve's 411th Engineer Battalion, who also come from Hawaii and Alaska, are expected to ship out toward the end of March, Sugai said.

Waikiki and Ala Moana beaches are those most commonly affected by the stinging sea creatures.

Other areas that could see an increase in the stinging creatures are: Waimea Bay, Ehukai, Sunset Beach, Pokai Bay, Maili Beach and Makaha.

Lifeguards will post signs in the Waikiki and Ala Moana areas if jellyfish are in the water.

Ocean Safety officials said people allergic to stings are advised to stay out of the water while the advisory is in effect. For more information, visit the Ocean Safety Web site at www.co.honolulu.hi.us/esd/oceansafety .
