City prosecutor Peter Carlisle is hoping for a "three-peat."

Carlisle submitted his nomination papers yesterday with the City Clerk to run for a third four-year term as Honolulu's prosecuting attorney.

"I think this is good work that's worth doing, and I enjoy doing it," Carlisle said.

Carlisle wants to concentrate on "evening the playing field" in the state criminal justice system, which he said works against truth, victims and witnesses.

He cited his office's efforts to change the way felony charges are brought against defendants, called information charging, which he contends would spare victims and witnesses from having to make multiple court appearances.

The Hawaii Supreme Court struck down a constitutional amendment last month allowing prosecutors to use information charging.

The state has asked the Supreme Court to reconsider and allow the question to be placed on the ballot in the fall general election.

There are no term limits for the city prosecutor, who is paid $112,200.

Candidates have until 4:30 p.m. July 20 to file their intent to run for city prosecutor in the upcoming election.

To qualify, candidates must be at least age 30, be a qualified voter in the City and County of Honolulu, be a licensed attorney in good standing before the Hawaii Supreme Court, have practiced law for five years and have been actively involved in criminal cases for three years within the 10 years preceding the elections.
