Wild card advances to face Irons

Wild card Luke Munro upset No. 4 Mick Fanning in the second round of the WCT Quicksilver Pro in Gold Coast, Australia, to advance to a third-round showdown with defending WCT champion Andy Irons.

"I'd love to go up against Andy," Munro said. "I watched his heat the other day and he ripped, but I'll be out there putting in my two waves."

Kalani Robb, another Hawaii surfer, overcame a broken board at the end of his first ride to defeat Pat O'Connell and advance.

"I got a barrel on my first wave and then did a floater, but when I came down I could feel the board bust under my feet," Robb said. "I feel lucky."

Bruce Irons wasn't as fortunate as Robb, losing to Danny Wills in a tight heat, 15.23 to 14.33.

Third-round action is scheduled to begin today, waves permitting.
