Korean-American documentary
showcased during pledge drive

Both parts of "Arirang -- The Korean American Dream," Hawaii filmmaker Tom Coffman's well-regarded documentary of the Korean-American experience, has become a prime-time event at many PBS stations around the country during pledge season.

It airs at 6 p.m. Sunday on KHET/PBS in Hawaii.

"This show has a life of its own," said Coffman. "All of the showings have been spontaneous, meaning no marketing campaign and no prompting. The live pledge likewise started out with a station in the Bay area -- San Mateo -- and is spreading. The National Asian American Telecommunications Association is projecting a 75 percent PBS market penetration by the end of Asian American Heritage Month in May."

The documentary includes the personal journeys of Hawaii authors Gary Pak and Katie Robinson, and Big Island Mayor Harry Kim.

Other station airing "Arirang" include KOCE in Irvine, KCSM in San Mateo and WLIW in Long Island.
