Sheraton Kauai sale complete

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. has completed its purchase of the 413-room Sheraton Kauai Resort, the Garden Island's second-largest hotel, from Obayashi Corp. for $40 million.

The property, located at Poipu Beach, had been managed for Japan-based Obayashi by Sheraton, a Starwood brand. Obayashi has said the new owner would hire all 300 employees at the hotel and honor the existing labor contract with the union representing the workers.

The Sheraton Kauai was one of Kauai's most severely damaged hotels in 1992's Hurricane Iniki. It did not reopen until 1997. The resort, on 18.8 acres, has five restaurants and lounges, a golf course and two pools.
