Charles Ogden: Was fatally shot Sunday on a Maui beach by a police officer

WAILUKU >> An autopsy is scheduled today on a man fatally shot by police after he allegedly sprayed a chemical agent at a police officer.

The man, Charles Benson Ogden, 48, formerly of Oklahoma, was shot on the beach about 150 yards south of Lipoa Street, Maui police acting Lt. Jamie Becraft said.

A woman who lives at a nearby condominium said the officer suffering from the chemical sprayed in his face shouted repeatedly for the man to lie down but the man refused to listen.

Several residents said they heard at least five shots fired about 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Ogden was taken to Maui Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The officer, 32, whose name has not been released by police, was treated and released from the medical center. The officer has been put on administrative leave with pay, pending the outcome of an internal affairs investigation.

Becraft said placing the officer on administrative leave is normal procedure.

The officer, who was on duty and wearing a uniform at the time of the shooting, has about 10 years of service, he said.
