DJ Shawn Ho
gets Japan gig

FRIENDS AND co-workers of KQMQ's Shawn Ho have described the midday jock as an international superstar for years, and now he's got another gig under his belt to prove it.

Thanks to a lucky break when Japanese radio DJ Kamasami Kong overheard one of his mixes while riding in a taxi here, Ho is now featured daily on FM802's "Heartbeat Mix." He plays a "very unique blend of world-class and Japanese pop, rock, urban and rap," according to Kong. "All types of music are considered as long as they fit."

And if you ask me, Ho owes afternoon jock Lisa D a nice dinner, too -- she was the one who took Kong's call in the studio that day and set up a meeting between the two ...

AN EXTRA helping of drama at work sent me scrambling to find things to do outside the office last week.

I wanted to try something new, so after catching up with 1043 XME's Cedric Duarte and Urusai, it was off to On Stage Drinks and Grinds for "Off Tha Track Thursdays."

While knocking back a few $2.50 drafts, we kicked it there for a bit with DJs Kee and Bless before heading off to Venus Nightclub. It was refreshing to walk in and find Epic Session performing live -- turns out we stopped by during "Island Voices," a new monthly that features island music instead of the usual stuff you'd hear at this particular club.

I guess it looked like I needed some love, so Freekflow.com's DJ Free gave me a baby-tee and told me to go find a girl. Smiling, I pocketed the shirt and took another sip of my beer. There's a reason why I haven't been to Venus for months, you know.

Maybe I'll have better luck there on March 25 when Ho'o Kani joins Hoku Award-winning group Typical Hawaiians for the next edition of "Island Voices." Doors open at 10 p.m. for the 18-and-over crowd; call 951-8671 ...

ANOTHER PARTY worth checking out is "The Pleasure Dome" on Saturday nights with Sick Dog Productions at University Bowl-O-Drome.

Neken performed live last weekend while people bowled around them, followed by DJ A2Z spinning wax until 4 a.m. Local grinds were also available, thanks to Iva Kinimaka ...

AND FINALLY, Shawn Felipe, Kaleo Pilanca and Cathy Tanaka are not students of Bo Irvine, as I wrote in this space last week. The three young comics got a chance to open at "Make Me Laugh 2" on Feb. 20 after performing well at "Crack Up Thursdayz," which Irvine hosts at All Star Hawaii ...
