UH swim teams finish second

The Hawaii's men swim team couldn't quite catch Southern Methodist at the National Independent Conference swimming championships yesterday. The Mustangs (903) maintained their double-digit lead from Friday and cruised to their fourth straight NIC title.

Hawaii swept the 200-yard breaststroke with Cheyne Bloch (1 minute, 55.88 seconds) setting a UH record. Chad Thomsen (1:59.58) and Tudor Ignat (2:00.43) finished in second and third.

Rainbow Wahine win three awards: Hawaii freshman Nicole Mackey captured her third individual gold medal in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:58.39 as UH finished second overall at the Western Athletic Conference swimming and diving championships with 711 points. Southern Methodist (911) won its eighth consecutive championship behind WAC Swimmer of the Year Georgina Lee. Nevada (661), Rice (551) and San Jose State (329) rounded out the top five.

Mackey earned WAC Freshman of the Year honors while Hawaii coach Mike Anderson (co-Coach of the Year) and Qiongie Huang (Diver of the Year) were also honored after the meet.

Seasiders get back on winning track

Jake Chrisman scored 27 points and and Austin Smylie dropped in 18 as Brigham Young-Hawaii beat Chaminade 88-71 in Pacific West Conference basketball at Laie last night.

Rainbow Wahine split two matches

The UH water polo team needed three goals in the fourth quarter to squeak out a 5-4 win over host UC Santa Barbara at the Gaucho Invitational.

The Rainbow Wahine got two goals in the first period before being held scoreless over the next two quarters. Colleen Shiman ended the drought and Darcy Scott-Hosaka scored with 44 seconds left in the game for the win.

In the second match, UCLA routed UH 10-5. The Bruins scored seven goals in the third quarter to pull away from a tight game.

Hawaii ends WAC championship in ninth

The infant Rainbow Wahine track program finished as expected at the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. Hawaii set two school records in the 60-meter hurdles (Candace Rosenthal, 9.12) and the 20-pound weight toss (Novelle Murray, 16.28 meters).

Nevada won its second team title with 151 points.

Rainbow Wahine lose to Wolverines

Hawaii's three-match win streak ended yesterday as No. 19 Michigan routed Hawaii 7-0 at the Central Oahu Tennis Complex. The Wolverines won every doubles match handily and took every singles match in straight sets.

The Rainbow Wahine play Long Beach State today at 10 a.m.
