WAILUKU >> State transportation officials want to relieve traffic congestion in west Maui by building an underpass below Lahainaluna Road and a 325-foot bridge over Kahoma Stream.

The proposed two-lane realignment would extend from Lahainaluna Road through Ikena Avenue to the future Keawe Street extension.

Officials plan to hold an informational meeting about the project tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the Lahaina Civic Center.

The proposed project is estimated to cost $30 million.

Utilities such as sewer, water, electricity, telephone, and cable TV systems will be relocated as needed for the new road and bridge structures, the state said.

During morning rush hour, traffic going from Honoapiilani Highway up Lahainaluna Road becomes congested, partially because it serves as the only artery for commuters to three schools, including Lahainaluna High School.

Eventually, the state plans to build a four-lane bypass going mauka of the town from Puamana to Honokowai.

The consulting firm of Austin Tsutsumi & Associates has completed a topographic survey of the area and is proposing right-of-way maps for the first phase, the state said.
