Paddling put out
by weather

The Kamehameha girls paddling team's attempt at a three-peat was put on hold temporarily yesterday, but the Warriors may have to wait a year for another try.

Weather conditions forced the postponement of the 2004 Hawaii High School Athletic Association/First Hawaiian Bank State canoe paddling championships. The 24-race event was rescheduled for today at 8 a.m.

Paddling coordinator Hartwell Lee Loy said this year's championship would be canceled if the weather is uncooperative again today. The logistics of coordinating travel and lodging for neighbor-island teams would not permit the event to be delayed until tomorrow.

Kamehameha (girls), Iolani (boys) and McKinley (mixed) are the reigning state champions of their respective divisions.

Paddling was not the only sport affected. The HHSAA/Local Motion swimming and diving championships were reconfigured.

The two-day event was reduced to split up. The diving events were held yesterday at the Kihei Aquatic Center. The swimming will start today at 10 a.m. at the Coach Soichi Sakamoto Pool in the War Memorial complex in Wailuku. Warm-ups will start at 8 a.m.

There will be 22 swimming events, with the eight fastest qualifiers (based on time) placed in the last heat of each event. Originally, there were 67 trial heats, with the finals determined based on finish in the heats.
