Local comedienne Cathy Tanaka will be paired with video producer and filmmaker Jason Suapaia to host the upcoming OC16 TV show "Hawaii's Reel Stories."

Set to begin airing on all the islands on April 19, the half-hour magazine-format program will showcase the diverse local film scene and will feature the creative work, skills and projects of Hawaii's film community.

Tanaka and Suapaia were chosen from nearly 40 auditioners by the show's executive producer Don Brown, former manager of the Restaurant Row 9 Art House Theaters, and co-producer Stephanie Castillo, a local documentary filmmaker.

"There's a freshness and endearing quality to both Cathy and Jason. This really drew us to them almost instantly, and pairing them made real sense," said Brown. "With their ties to the film community, we couldn't be more pleased.

For Suapaia, who co-founded and hosts the annual Ohina Short Film Showcase, now in its fifth year, this will be his first shot at TV hosting. "I've always been a strong supporter of the independent film community here in Hawaii. It's a great pleasure to be part of Hawaii's Reel Stories, something that supports the community even more," he says.
