UH Foundation leader to leave post in March

Just as the University of Hawaii is about to embark on a major fund-raising campaign to mark the university's 100th anniversary, the head of the UH Foundation is leaving to take a job at Harvard Divinity School.

UH Foundation President Elizabeth "Betsy" Sloane will become associate dean for development and alumni relations.

Her last day at the UH Foundation is March 31.

Donna Vuchinich, vice president of development for the foundation, will become acting president, effective April 1.

"Betsy has done a tremendous job over the last two years building the kind of high-caliber team and infrastructure that will be needed for the upcoming centennial capital campaign," said foundation board of trustees Chairman Howard Karr.

Fiscal year 2003 fund-raising levels are up 22.6 percent from the previous year and the endowment has grown to $113.5 million as of January 2004.

Sloane is married to J.R. "Wick" Sloane, the UH vice president for administration. Wick Sloane's contract with the university will not be renewed.

The Sloanes were recruited by UH President Evan Dobelle to come to the university shortly after Dobelle was hired in 2001.

Search finds nothing after diver sighting

A search for a suspicious diver spotted after midnight Monday in Honolulu Harbor turned up nothing yesterday.

A U.S. Coast Guardsman standing watch reported seeing a diver surface near the Coast Guard station's 47-foot motor lifeboat off Sand Island.

A multi-agency search, which included police, state sheriffs, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the federal Joint Terrorism Task Force was launched yesterday morning, a Coast Guard official said.

The Coast Guard used multiple boats and an HH-65 helicopter.

Army and Navy diverssearched under the piers in the immediate area.

The Coast Guard found nothing suspicious or unusual after a search of the area, which concluded at 9 a.m. yesterday.
