McDonald's name 24 senior as semifinalists

Twenty-four of Hawaii's finest high school seniors were named semifinalists for the McDonald's All-American basketball teams. Sixteen local girls and eight boys were chosen among the 2,700 nominees from around the country.

Girls from Hawaii selected are: Monaria Ale, Karla Tailele and Latoya Willy from Kahuku; Meagan Miyasaka, Bre Carson and Chantal Yadao from McKinley; Jasmin Dulan from St. Francis; Farrington's Sunshine Misa-Uli; Kalaheo's Taylor Smith; Kepuanani Lee from Moanalua; Iolani's Ginger Gravelle; Mounia Nihipali and India Soo from Kamehameha; Maryknoll's Hennesea Tokumura; Nancy Hoist of Konawaena; and Saundra Cariaga from Kealakehe.

The boys' nominees from Hawaii are: Iolani's Derrick Low; Jordon Dizon and Casey Kaohelaulii from Waimea; Ranson DeCosta from Damien; Desmond Hanohano from Saint Louis; Kaimuki's Jimmy Miyasaka; Kalaheo's Sam Wilhoite; and Gene Rivera from Maui High School.

Hawaii's Inouye named WAC Player of the Week

Hawaii catcher Matthew Inouye was named WAC Player of the Week yesterday after hitting .600 with nine RBIs and four runs scored in Hawaii's four wins last week.

This is the first career WAC Player of the Week award for the sophomore from Mid-Pacific Institute.

Griffin named PWC Player of the Week

Hawaii-Hilo guard Justin Griffin was named Pacific West Conference Player of the Week yesterday after averaging nearly 20 points a game in three Vulcan wins.

The 6-foot-4 junior scored a season-high 27 points on Saturday to help the Vulcans erase a 13-point deficit in beating Montana State-Billings.

BYU-Hawaii sweeps Chaminade in tennis

Brigham Young-Hawaii earned 9-0 wins over Chaminade in both men's and women's tennis matches yesterday.

The third-ranked men's teams improved to 4-1 for the season and won every match played, dropping only two sets. Simon Kersten defeated Gerome Gregory 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 in the best match of the day.

The women were even better, sweeping Chaminade without even dropping a set, extending their winning streak to 71 victories in a row. The Seasiders won't have much time for rest as they are set to take on Division I opponent Long Beach State on Thursday in Laie at 11 a.m.
