KHNL staffers
getting hitched

THERE MUST be something in the water at KHNL's studios on Nimitz Highway.

Five -- count 'em, FIVE -- News8 staffers plan on getting hitched later this year, and only one is getting married to someone who doesn't have ties to the station. That would be reporter Cindy Paliracio, who will wed stockbroker Mike Hozempa next month.

Sports guy Russ Yamanoha and technician Lea Akiona are also getting married, to former KHNL producer Tammy Sumida and former technician David Hunt, respectively. And it will be an in-house thing for technical director Heather Kaman and chief photographer Dan Arakaki when they walk down the aisle later this year. Congrats to all ...

JUDGING BY the talent veteran funnyman Bo Irvine brought with him to the Hawaiian Hut last Friday, his weekly "Crack Up Thursdayz" open microphone sessions are doing a pretty good job cultivating the next generation of Hawaii stand-up comedians.

Three of his students -- Shawn Felipe, Kaleo Pilanca and Cathy Tanaka -- were selected to help open for Irvine and the uninhibited Mel Cabang at "Make Me Laugh 2," and they all showed promise in front of two capacity crowds.

Pilanca seemed to get the best audience response during the show I attended, while Felipe scored points with his good-natured ribbing of local Filipino culture. Tanaka, the only female performer on the bill, seemed a little nervous at times, but I liked her witty sense of humor and original material.

Want to catch a glimpse of other up-and-coming comedians? Check out "Crack Up Thursdayz" at All Star Hawaii, starting at 8 p.m. Call 955-8326 for more info ...

IN THIS day and age of multimillion-dollar blockbuster movies, home DVD players and other high-tech forms of entertainment, it was quite refreshing to sit down at Indigo on Saturday night and be entertained by the words, music and dancing of "Tales of the Arabian Nights."

Storyteller Jeff Gere, with musical backing by Steven Rosenthal and Reggae McGowen, told the tale of "Camaralzaman" as the lovely Willow Chang belly-danced and helped to act out a few scenes. I got a kick out of Gere's facial contortions as he spoke, and was amazed to hear Chang bust out a cheesy Chinese accent a few times during the night (I was told she hardly ever speaks during a production).

You've got one more chance this weekend to check out "Tales of the Arabian Nights" before Gere and crew take a break; call 521-2900 for reservations ...
