29 players evaluated by Islanders staff

Hawaiian Islanders head coach Cal Lee and his staff evaluated 29 players yesterday at the Saint Louis School field in the first open tryout of the year for the arenafootball2 league team.

Among the participants were former University of Hawaii players Joe Wigfall, Chris Smith and Keiki Misipeka; and Joe Tuinei, son of former UH standout Tom Tuinei. Approximately half of the hopefuls are expected to be invited back to next month's final tryout. Training camp opens March 11.

Frazier to speak on Big Island

University of Hawaii athletic director Herman Frazier is the featured speaker at tomorrow's UH Professors, Deans and Directors lecture series.

The event, scheduled for 6 p.m., will be held at the Four Seasons Hualalai in Kona. Frazier will speak on managing an NCAA Division I athletic program.

The lecture is free and open to the public, but seating is limited. For information, call 322-4853 (Big Island).

Vulcans sweep Silverswords in softball

HILO >> Miki Asamura tossed a six-hitter and Laura Kimborowicz drove in the game's only run on a sacrifice fly in the first inning as Hawaii-Hilo edged Chaminade 1-0 to complete a sweep of a Pacific West softball doubleheader at the UHH softball field.

In the opener, Kayla Kahuli broke a scoreless deadlock in the fourth with a solo home run and Jennifer McCorkhill singled in two runs in the sixth to give the Vulcans a 3-0 victory

The Vulcans improved to 12-3 overall and 8-0 in the PWC. Chaminade fell to 4-10 and 4-2.

Wahine rained out: The Hawaii softball team finished 2-2 at the Campbell/Cartier Classic yesterday after overnight rains created unplayable conditions at the Sportsplex USA.

Cal State Northridge was declared the winner of the 12-team tournament with a 4-0 record.

Hawaii has a week off before opening a 15-game homestand on March 2 with a doubleheader against Siena.

Kapalua receives Golf Magazine award

Kapalua was named one of America's Best Resorts by the readers of Golf Magazine, one of 25 national winners featured in next month's issue.

This is the ninth consecutive award for the Maui property, which features three championship golf courses and hosts the PGA's Mercedes Championships.

Surfers to be honored at 'Champions' banquet

Hawaii's Andy Irons, Keala Kennelly and Melanie Bartels are among those who will be honored Saturday at the Association of Surfing Professionals Champions of the World awards banquet in Queensland, Australia.

The ASP function brings together the 45 top-rated men and 17 women as well as former champions. Headlining the awards are the 2003 World Championship Tour champions Irons (men) and Layne Beachley (women). Kennelly is the WCT runner-up and Bartels is the women's World Qualifying Series winner.
