Low-sugar local grinds

A newly renovated Kenny's Restaurant has revamped its menu, adding dishes for those watching their sugar intake.

Chopped steak, chicken sukiyaki, pork or chicken tofu, oyako donburi and Chinese chicken salad are among items that can be made with sugar or a sugar substitute. The company also has added a line of no-carb dishes.

Catering orders -- say, for a tray of chicken sukiyaki -- can also be made sugar-free.

Renovation of the 140-seat Kenny's, in the Kamehameha Shopping Center in Kalihi, began last August and was finished in December.

Restaurant hours are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 6 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. Call 841-3733 or 841-0931.

Low-carb Mexican

Compadres Bar & Grill is showcasing low-carbohydrate, low-fat, high-protein menu items, specialties from chef Alfonso Navarro's native Jalisco, Mexico.

The new dishes include lettuce tacos filled with turkey picadillo or salmon, grilled salmon fillets with citrus-chipotle sauce and Sonorense meatloaf, which is baked, then grilled to order and topped with a sugar-free teriyaki-chipotle sauce.

Compadres also offers low-carb alternatives with regular menu items, such as burgers with sliced tomatoes and salsa instead of a bun, or whole-wheat tortillas instead of corn or flour.

Read all about it

art Is it a magazine, a cookbook or a really slick infomercial in print? When it comes to the new Aloha Recipes Guide, all of the above.

Vol. 1, No. 1 of the triennial publication is headed for newsstands and participating restaurants.

Restaurants pay a fee for placement of their recipes and slick photos of their chefs and signature dishes. The cover of the magazine is personalized for each restaurant for in-house sales; the issue sold on newsstands has small photos of all the featured chefs.

The magazine also includes a discussion of Hawaii Regional Cuisine, a seafood guide and other features. Cover price is $8.
