UH-Hilo golfer in contention

Brandon Abreu shot a 4-under 68 to finish in a tie for sixth after two rounds at the John Burns Intercollegiate yesterday at Leilehua Golf Course.

The Hawaii-Hilo 'A' and 'B' teams are 17th and 18th in the 22-team tournament, ahead of both UH-Manoa teams. The Manoa 'A' team sits in 19th place while the 'B' team is 22nd.

Senior Matt Kodama leads UH-Manoa after shooting back-to-back 2-under 70s and currently is tied for 14th place overall. Right behind him is sophomore Pierre-Henri Soero, tied for 19th place with a two-day score of 141.

The final round begins this morning at 7:30. Spencer Levin of New Mexico leads the tournament at 132, followed by Henry Liaw of Arizona a stroke behind.

Big Swell halts Energy Pro

The 2004 Hansen's Energy Pro was called a heat short of a complete round yesterday due to highly dangerous conditions, but not without plenty of spectacular rides.

Marcus Hickman emerged as the top surfer after the first day, scoring a perfect 10 on one ride and finishing with 18.17 points. Local favorite Derek Ho, who is the oldest competitor in the field, finished with a near-perfect tube ride of 9.1 in the last 10 minutes of his heat to finish with 13.83 points.

In a day that saw more than 10 surfboards break, water-patrol official Terry Ahue announced they would call it a day early as the wave heights continued to soar.

Organizers expect competition to resume today. For more contest information, visit www.hansens.com.

Vulcans break 100 against Mustangs

Ryan Abrahams scored 21 points in 24 minutes and Kenon Thompson buried a 3-pointer at the buzzer to put UH-Hilo over the century mark in a 101-59 win against Western New Mexico at Hilo yesterday.

Alex Cabagnot scored 19 points for the Vulcans, who improved to 14-7 overall and 6-5 in the Pacific West Conference. Matt Enriquez led Western New Mexico (7-16, 4-9) with 13 points and Brendon Malone added 10.
