Man charged in
attempted murder case

Honolulu police have charged a 27-year-old man with the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend outside Kuhio School.

Anthony K. Nao made his initial appearance in court Tuesday and is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Police say Nao struck the woman with an unidentified object about 2 p.m. Friday outside the school at 2759 S. King St. in Moiliili.

A witness said Nao followed her into Lee's Beauty Nail Salon nearby and stabbed her four times.

Police arrested Nao on Sunday. No weapons were recovered.

The nail salon was filled with customers when the woman, already bloody, ran into the shop, said owner Nhuy "Martha" Nguyen.

"She say: 'He outside. Help me and the children. Call my sister (to) pick up the children,'" said Nguyen.

Nguyen said Nao grabbed the woman by her hair, pulled her onto the floor and stabbed her four times in the neck.

The victim was taken to the Queen's Medical Center. Her condition was not released.

Nao has a history of domestic abuse, according to court records. He was arrested in September for physically abusing a woman with whom he lived and pleaded guilty to an assault charge.

Nao was sentenced in November to a year of probation and was required to undergo domestic violence education and parenting classes.

A preliminary hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to send the case to trial is scheduled for today.
