Lajola falls in semifinals

Second-seeded Tye Myers defeated Aiea's Dennis Lajola 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the finals of the 2004 USTA National Jr. Open at Central Oahu Regional Park yesterday.

Lajola, 15 and unseeded in the tournament, will play top-seeded Jonathan Tragardh in this morning's consolation semifinals at 9 a.m. If Lajola wins, he will play for the consolation championship at noon.

Rainbow Wahine bit by Lions

The Hawaii softball team dropped a nonconference doubleheader at Loyola Marymount yesterday.

In the first game, Ashley Ruff scored Hawaii's only run in a 5-1 loss. Brittany Bassett's fly out to left field in the bottom of the seventh scored Margo Pineda to give the Lions a 4-3 win in game two. Stacey Ritter had two hits and drove in two runs for Hawaii (5-8).

Guillermo drops one at Olympic trials

Waianae's Samson Guillermo dropped a 17-14 decision to Sacramento's Sergio Ramos in the 119-pound weight class in yesterday's double-elimination Olympics trials tournament yesterday in Tunica, Miss.

Even after the loss, Guillermo's Olympic hopes are still alive, as the top two finishers in the weight class advance to this summer's Olympic games in Athens. His next bout is this morning against Miguel Albares of Fort Collins, Colo.

Seasiders slip 6 spots in poll

After winning two of three games on the road last week, the Brigham Young-Hawaii men's basketball team dropped six spots to No. 23 in the latest Division II poll.

The Seasiders (19-4) are first nationally in field goal percentage (53.6), and sophomore Shawn Opunui is second in the nation in 3-point shooting percentage (54.6).

Chaminade 107, Montana State-Billings 75: Bryon Sykes and Roy Stigall each scored 22 points to help the Silverswords (7-12, 4-5 Pacific West Conference) beat the Yellowjackets (15-8, 6-6).

Jarett Skrifvars scored 30 points for the Yellowjackets.

Hawaii-Hilo 89, Western New Mexico 74: At Hilo, Ryan Hogue and Justin Griffin scored 18 points each to lead the Vulcans past the Mustangs at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

Ryan Abrahams hit three 3-pointers as Hilo improved to 13-7, 5-5. Western New Mexico (7-15, 4-8) was led by Matt Enriquez (17 points and Jason Jackson (14).

Hawaii drivers square off with Team Alaska

The top 12 auto racing drivers from Hawaii and Alaska will compete in the Alaska vs. Hawaii Shootout this weekend.

The shootout is scheduled for Friday evening and all day Sunday at Hawaii Raceway Park located in the Campbell Industrial Park.
